REAL MEN

When I was a young man still living at home and reached dating age, my mother had the same routine for me whenever I was trying to leave the house to meet a young lady. As I approached the front door, she would stop me and say, “Frankie, remember you have a mother and a sister.” I always responded the same way: “What’s that supposed to mean?” “You know exactly what that means” was her consistent reply. Feigning exasperation, I made my way out the door and on my way.

But you know what? She was right. I did know exactly what she meant. It’s called respect, respect for women. And she was not alone in her demand. My father was right there with her.

I remember another incident that reinforced that lesson. I had reached an age when I became increasingly aware of girls in a way that I never had before. I suppose that’s called puberty. Whatever the scientific term is, the feelings of curiosity about the opposite sex became increasingly intense. And with that curiosity came other feelings that I didn’t quite understand but needed to explore. Of course, that meant nascent experiences with sexual urges. I was just fascinated by the differences in the female body.

One day while I was hiking in a small patch of woods near our house, I found a discarded mailbag. When I opened it, I was amazed (and delighted) to find it was filled with so-called “girlie” magazines! Some of them were relatively benign, but others featured graphic nudity. I had never seen anything like it. I was awestruck! After thoroughly going through the stack for some time, I put all but one back into the sack. That one was coming with me for further inspection.

When I got home, I immediately stashed the magazine in what I thought would be a safe hiding spot where I could occasionally return for further investigation. I suppose that I went there often in the beginning, but over the course of time I think that I may have forgotten that it was there. That is, until my mother found it when she was cleaning. I remember hearing her say, “Frank, what’s this?” while she was thumbing through the magazine’s pages. I knew the jig was up and I had no adequate response. That’s when she said the line I dreaded: “Just wait until your father gets home. He can deal with this.” I retreated to my room for the agonizing wait, expecting the terrible punishment my father would visit upon me when he returned.

After what felt like an eternity, I heard my father’s car pull into the driveway, the front door open, and his footsteps methodically working their way up the stairs to my bedroom. The door opened. I resigned myself to my fate and waited to receive my punishment.

But instead of anger, my father began to speak to me softly and with great empathy and understanding. He said, “Frankie, I understand those feelings. As men, we all do. And I get the attraction. But you must understand those magazines exploit women and have no place here in our home.” It was as if a great burden had been lifted off my shoulders. I wasn’t worried so much about any physical consequences of my actions, but the psychological ones. I was already embarrassed. I was also feeling so guilty and ashamed.

However, my father didn’t use any of those emotions to make his point. Instead, his use of calm compassion and deep understanding of the real innocence of it all turned it into a lesson I have never forgotten. He turned something potentially ugly into a beautiful lesson. I know my younger brother received the same kind of guidance in his life.

I want to stress that children do not raise themselves. I understand the enormous challenges involved. This can be particularly true of young men, especially at the onset of puberty and sexual awareness. It made me think of Jeffrey Epstein. Without proper guidance, the world is bound to create more men like him.

It’s not easy being a man — a real man. It takes a lifetime and guidance, lots of guidance. Even the strongest of us can’t do it alone. Teach your children and they will learn.

Perhaps that’s why I feel this entire Jeffrey Epstein affair is not only vile and disgusting, but also inconceivable in my life. I simply was not brought up that way. This is well beyond politics. Any man accused of the behavior attributed to Epstein is not a man. There is no excuse. Release the files and let those responsible be punished to the fullest extent of the law – whoever they may be. It’s what men, real men, do. This is what I was taught. This is what I know.

WHY?

Lost within the chaos that has been created by the Trump Administration’s mass deportation policy is a crucial question that no one seems to be focusing on: WHY? Exactly why is it necessary to evict the very people who have contributed so much to America and whose only crime is entering the Country in secret when doing so was their only choice?

The administration, among other bald-faced lies, claims that so-called “illegals” are destroying the country. Despite strong, irrefutable evidence to the contrary, the president claims that migrants are stealing jobs from American citizens, abusing the welfare system, and committing crimes that are exceptionally frequent and heinous. However, the facts are quite the opposite and easy to find on the internet. Immigrants, regardless of their citizenship status, take mostly menial but important jobs that no Americans seem to want to do any more. They do not receive benefits illegally and contribute billions of dollars to our economy. Additionally, crime statistics in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods show significantly lower crime rates than in those that are not.!

But it goes beyond just statistics. My partner Amanda and I live in a modest home in a working-class neighborhood with many immigrants. It’s a safe, friendly neighborhood. People support each other and look out for each other. We’ve never had a single issue.

With that in mind, we can’t understand this irrational fear and loathing of our immigrant communities. Don’t buy their rhetoric! This administration is lying to you. These people are not our enemies; the people making the policies are. Immigrants don’t harm us. They enrich us. So, why would we want them to leave?

Some people may still avoid the comparisons to what is happening in America today to what happened in pre-WWII Germany. But if we ever could, we certainly cannot avoid them now. What is occurring comes right out of the fascist handbook, i.e. find someone who may be different to blame for all of society’s ill. For the Nazis, it was the gypsies, the homosexuals, the intellectuals, the Jews, and, of course, anyone who was not a native-born German, i.e. immigrants. It’s a comparison most Americans are loath to make, but there it is. We can longer deny what is happening before our very eyes.

However, there are a few encouraging signs that people of conscience and courage are starting to fight back. Recently, following the lead of Governor Kathy Hochul of New York, a handful of Democrat Rockland County politicians have formulated a Safety and Dignity for All Act to be put before the county legislature. Among other methods to protect our immigrant neighbors, it calls for limiting the power of ICE agents to operate within the county while still supporting and improving communication and cooperation between all law enforcement agencies. Of course, it was met with immediate opposition from Republicans led by Congressman Mike Lawler and State Senator Bill Weber. After a recent session of the legislature, where there was open comment about the proposed legislation, the overflow crowd of hundreds appeared to be overwhelming in favor of the proposal.

As is often customary in situations of such importance and impact, the legislature decided not to vote directly on the proposal but to schedule another public forum at a later date so that even more people could be heard. However, true to the GOP plan of disinformation, the offices of both Lawler and Weber falsely claimed that the proposal, advanced by Beth Davidson (D-Nyack, Clarkstown), Public Safety Committee Chair Paul Cleary (D-Haverstraw) had failed. This is simply inaccurate but once again typical of what is happening in our country. We have an entire party (the GOP) trying to convince us that things we have seen with our own eyes are not what they appear.

I’m not buying it and never have. And, hopefully, the entire Country is finally waking up to the same charade. Come on, no one wants “bad guys” on our streets. Find them, no matter what color they are or where they come from and get rid of them. But their current tactics fall far short of that goal. Think of it as Seine net fishing — using huge nets anchored to the ocean floor to catch as many fish as possible without real regard to the type. Everything within that net is taken. For obvious reasons, that type of fishing has been banned in many countries worldwide. Except in this case, instead of fish, it’s being employed on human beings. So, Republicans, let’s leave our neighbors alone and do the job you were elected to do — pass responsible, humane immigration reform.

WHEN THEY COME FOR YOU

Words and photo by F LoBuono

The recent deaths of Nicole Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota were more than tragic. Beyond the action of the ICE agents who took their lives, their deaths were completely unnecessary and preventable, too. Without President Trump and his draconian immigration, i.e. mass deportation policies, none of this happens. Measured by the size and frequency of mass demonstrations, no one wants ICE there.

But there are also many other issues at play that, quite frankly, may have gotten us in this predicament in the first place.

Although I am very encouraged by the activism and resistance to the increasing tyranny imposed on the American people by the Trump Administration, I can’t help but wonder how it took the death of two white people to get the point of outrage being expressed by mainstream America.

It has taken the death of a legally gun-carrying white man (Pretti) to get the powerful NRA lobby involved in the victim of a police officer shooting to express their “outrage.” It’s not like gun violence doesn’t happen on a frighteningly regular basis in minority communities, right? But I suppose that, according to the NRA, as long as it stays there, everything is OK.

Do you remember Philando Castile? He was a 32-year-old Black man who was shot and killed in front of his girlfriend and children by the police, also in a Minneapolis suburb, in 2016 during a routine traffic stop. It seems that like Mr. Pretti, he was legally carrying a handgun, which he immediately informed the police he had in his possession. He then reached for his identification, which was required by the police. As he did so, he was shot dead. The officer who fired the fatal shot “feared for his life” in the presence of Castile’s gun and was later acquitted at trial.

I don’t recall a single protest coming from the NRA. There were no mass demonstrations. His name is mostly lost to time. And this has happened and continues to in Black and Brown America ALL OF THE TIME. So NOW we’re outraged? What makes what’s happening so different than the times it has happened repeatedly in minority communities?

Apparently, until it affects us, i.e. our tribe, we lack interest. But when it does, we’re willing to do almost anything to win back our privilege. To paraphrase Lutheran Pastor Martin Neimoller:

 First they came for Castile…

This whole Trump presidency has exposed an ugly side of America, one that, unfortunately may have been with us since our inception and may be with us until our demise. After all, America has always been an experiment. And by their very nature, experiments are wrought with both success and failure. Combating racism, bigotry, and xenophobia will remain a challenge we haven’t met. Yet.
