Get beyond the the slavery reference and, it is as pertinent today as it was more than a century ago. . . .

A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Choices have already been made and we have paid the price. But, Democracy is a living thing. Therefore, it must evolve. And, we must get beyond this plague - this, idiocy - this, megalomania. We ARE better that that. We ARE smarter than that. We ARE more WISE than that. At least most of us are - literally - It's time to show it and STEP UP.
