Today's MOZEN: The Cost of Violence

F LoBuono
Galatians 6:7
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.

Should you be wondering where that proverb comes from, there it is.

But, how does an ancient biblical proverb apply to today's society? Well, considering what has happened in just the last few days, it couldn't be more appropriate. Violence rules the streets! And, we are left to ask the question, again, WHY?

Well, if I may be so bold, I can tell you WHY - we live in an ultra-violent society. Just connect the dots. We WORSHIP guns and violence. It is as pervasive as it is perverse. It's on our TV's. It's in our films. It's contained within the lyrics of our music. We can even find it in video GAMES for children! We reserve our greatest praise for ass-kicking, take-no-prisoners heroes. Matt Damon's new movie (which I guarantee will be a huge hit), Jason Borne, is the latest in his series about an indestructible Super Spy who is deadly in every aspect of the word. He uses ultra-violence to annihilate his opponents. Even commercials that empower women usually exhibit some type of "aggressive" behavior to do so. How many commercials aimed at women feature one working out by punching or kicking a heavy bag? Think about it - I get the image of empowerment, but it is done with a violent gesture.

We are so fascinated by violence that even my business, TV News, glorifies it with the statement "if it bleeds, it leads". Generally, the bloodier the story the more eyeballs you can expect to be watching.

We are saturated with it. Literally. We are dripping in blood.

There are tangible reasons: poverty, racism, avarice, the NRA.

But, what are the ANSWERS?

We must reject violence IN ALL ITS FORMS. Reject violent TV programs and movies. Eschew violent video games. Refuse violent music. Teach your children that nothing, in the end, is resolved by violence. STOP BEING AFRAID TO SAY NO - NO MORE!!!!!!!

We only lack the courage . . .
